Artist and pioneer gallery owner Merton D Simpson (1928-) was born inn Charleston, South Carolina. He is one of the last surviving members of what is generally referred to a s "The Spiral Group," that at one time included Hale Woodruff, Romare Bearden, and Norman Lewis to namer a few. Lewis suggested the name "spiral" for the Archimedean spiral which is constantly expanding as it rises.
