Frederick Carl Frieseke (1874-1939) was an important Impressionist painter, born in Michigan though he worked in France from 1898 onward. He married an American, Sarah O'Bryan, and their only child Frances (1914-1998) married Kenton Kilmer, son of the poet Joyce Kilmer. This small group of family papers includes: Frieseke's French registration as a foreign national, 1909 1882 Shakespeare study guide bearing Frieseke's bookplate and his Owosso, MI signature Copper plate for the calling card of Mrs. Frieseke His 1939 tax document His customs declaration for a silver medal and check sent to France by the Corcoran Gallery, undated World War Two ration books of his wife and daughter, 1943 11 photographs of the artist ranging from a boyhood carte-de-visite, to a snapshot of him painting a portrait outdoors, to two formal portraits of the artist as a young man 34 other photographs showing 4 generations of the Frieseke family from the artist's grandfather through his daughter (a few of them copy prints), circa 1880-1938. Provenance: purchased at the Virginia sale of the effects of Frances Frieseke Kilmer in 1996, as attested by a signed note from her daughter Miriam Kilmer.
