first american edition. The first Bible printed in New York, issued in 40 parts over two years. Although issued as the posthumous work of a Scottish editor, the plates were American and it was promoted with patriotic fervor. The frontispiece features the New York seal and allegorical figures of religion, liberty, and America holding the Constitution and the Bible. George Washington appears first on the list of subscribers. The family registers give births and deaths in the families of Peter Coruth and New York shoemaker Michael Griffeth through 1832.
