First edition, reprinted several times in the 1990s. Alencar (1829-1877) was active in both politics and literature; during this period he served as Brazilian Minister of Justice. "An extremely important though little known work. . . . This work's central theme is the minorities' right of representation"--McGuirk, "Brazil and the Discovery of America," page 28. A similarly scarce first edition of his novel Iracema hammered for $12,000 at Swann in 2014. 7 in OCLC, and none traced at auction.
