Additional Details

This Arkansas health spa and resort was located within Hot Springs National Park and was owned by the Knights of Pythias fraternal order. It opened in 1914 and employed a Black staff including its managing physician Harold Hilton Phipps (1882-1962), and catered to a Black clientele. R.A. Hester and A.G. Gaston (of Gaston Motel fame, see also lot 155) held their posts within the Pythians from at least 1947 to 1963. However, the pamphlet was produced before the 1953 merger of Chicago & Southern Airlines into Delta. The hotel remained in operation through 1974.
