(BUSINESS.) Pair of Booker T. Washington-related buttons. Each 1 1/2 inches across; minor wear. Vp, early 20th century

Additional Details

The first pin bears the name of the National Negro Business League, a business organization founded by Booker T. Washington in 1900. At center is a blue and yellow illustration of a beehive, which symbolized industriousness and sometimes served as the organization's logo. It has no date or maker's mark, but probably dates from the early 20th century. It is sealed on verso and pierced by a small ring for hanging, rather than a pinback.
The second advertises an annual meeting of the Farmers' School (5 to 20 January) and Tuskegee Negro Conference (21 and 22 January), both held at Washington's Tuskegee Institute. The annual conference was launched in 1892; we would guess this pinback button dates from circa 1910-20. Newark, NJ: Whitehead & Hoag, undated.
