Additional Details

The American Negro Exposition was put on by the Chicago Negro Chamber of Commerce, following a successful smaller event in 1938. The pamphlet is titled "An Exposition of Negro Business." [20] pages. 4to, 11 3/4 x 8 3/4 inches, original printed wrappers; light rusting to staples, otherwise minimal wear. The first page is an impassioned appeal for the support of local black-owned businesses. The rest of the volume consists almost entirely of advertisements for local businesses, with a short program for the 9 June 1940 opening festivities. One in OCLC, and none traced at auction.
The photograph shows the crowd in the stands at Soldier Field on 25 August 1940. The photographer is credited as Dante; it comes from the Chicago Tribune archives. 9 x 11 inches; minor wear including small chip in top edge; printed caption and inked date stamp on verso.
