Additional Details

This manuscript describes the circuitous mail route from Mexico to Alta California: first to Alamos in Sonora, then across the gulf to Loreto, then up the coast to the Alta California settlements of San Diego, Santa Barbara (established 1782), Monterrey, and San Francisco. Some seasonal variants are offered--letters addressed in March or April should be sent first to San Blas in Nayarit, for example. This short essay concludes with a rule of thumb: "De qualquier fuente que se diriga la correspondencia siempre tanda la contestacion como seis meses"--expect a return letter to take six months.
