The earlier letter is addressed to a friend named Parkman and dated Victoria, Hong Kong, 25 September 1846. He describes the very limited social life of an American in Hong Kong, and begs his friend to send women: "Young ladies, pretty & accomplished, could make very good matches here. . . . If you really know some pretty girls who however by their gadding and tale bearing make themselves odious, send them out here, you will get rid of them." The second letter is addressed to Wild's father Charles Wild from Shanghai, 2 July 1847, where he was employed as a book-keeper: "I have reached the remotest foreign trading community in China now."
