Additional Details

In September of 1963, school integration in 144 schools in eleven states across the South began. In most areas things went off with little trouble. There were grumbles and some nasty shouts and name calling, but Alabama made the evening news around the country when Governor George Wallace personally stood at the doorway to the University of Alabama, and would not allow the black freshmen and women to enter. Material like this was distributed all over the South. The "Bogey man" of communism was used to discredit Martin Luther King Jr., and the whole civil rights movement.
