an uncommon legal instrument, filled out and signed by martin r delany as trial justice for the charleston court. Martin R. Delany, (1812-1885) was one of the first African Americans to gain admission to Harvard Medical School, and in 1853 accompanied Joseph Campbell on an exploring expedition to the Niger Valley to find adequate territory for an American black settlement. He served as a trial justice in Charleston from 1874 to 1877.
