Additional Details

A partial copy of Frank J. Bramhall's "The Military Souvenir, a Portrait Gallery of our Military and Naval Heroes," produced for use by a canvasser to gather subscriptions prior to publication. The completed book had 75 engravings. This one has only a group portrait of Lincoln and his cabinet, and full-page portraits of Generals Scott, McClellan, Frémont, and Burnside. The industrious canvasser kept the fourth subscription leaf open for the principal generals, and managed to secure the signatures of Scott, McClellan, and Burnside in sequence. By 1863, Scott and McClellan had left active duty, though Burnside's signature may have been harder to obtain. Among the other notable signers were New York Governor Horatio Seymour, New York's adjutant general John Meredith Read Jr., and Senator Henry Wilson of Natick, MA (a future vice president). An interesting artifact of Civil War publishing history. Not listed in Zinman-Arbour, Canvassing Books.
