Additional Details

A children's book with patriotic military rhymes for each letter of the alphabet, such as "M is for Monument, to honor the brave / N is for Negro, no longer a slave." Lincoln appears under P for President. At least one of the illustrations was adapted from Winslow Homer: "H is for Hard-tack, you scarcely can gnaw" (see his Life in Camp cards, lot 246). Not in Nevins, one other traced at auction since 1914. The copies in OCLC all list Degen, Estes & Co. as the publisher in 1864; we trace no other examples of this undated variant by Degen, Estes & Priest.
