Albumen (7) and salted paper (1) prints, 3 1/4x4 3/4 inches (8.3x12.1 cm.), the albumen prints on the original mount with Riddle's printed title, credit, date, and copyright; the salted paper print apparently with Riddle's handwritten notations, in ink, on mount recto. 1864

Andrew Jackson Riddle was the Confederate Army's chief photographer. A former daguerrreotypist, Riddle recognized the public's growing interest in the war's more shocking aspects. Few scenes would have disturbed Victorian sensibilities more than Andersonville, the infamous Confederate prison which had the dubious distinction of being the largest and most inhumane of Civil War stockades. Under the direction of the cruel Captain Henry Wirz, conditions at Andersonville, a facility designed to accommodate 10,000 inmates, housed 33,000 Union men. Disease was rampant, starvation common, and senseless killings an everyday occurrence--conditions which ultimately led to Wirz's public execution.<
