Additional Details

An early, and important, daguerreotype by Robert Cornelius depicting the polymath Dr. Solomon Andrews (1806-1872). Andrews is best known for inventing the first flying machine with a steering device, a self-propelled balloon called the "Aereon," which had its maiden voyage over Perth Amboy on June 1, 1863. The ship could master the stiffest wind using the same principle that a sailboat uses sailing into the wind. To this day, no other man has been able to fly an airship without a motor. <
