(CIVIL WAR--CONFEDERATE.) James H. Wingfield. Telegram to David Ruggles, apparently docketed by him on verso. Manuscript telegram as colonel of the 3rd Louisiana Cavalry to Brigadier General Daniel Ruggles. One page on printed South-Western Telegraph Company slip, 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches, docketed on verso; folds, minor wear. Ponchatoula, LA, 16 July 1862
"The rain is very heavy & having no cartridge boxes, am uneasy about my ammunition. Shall I go?" This telegram was sent about 10 weeks after the Union capture of New Orleans, and 3 weeks before the Battle of Baton Rouge. The docketing on verso reads in part "Rec'd Hd. Qrs" and "R July 16" with the latter "R" closely resembling Ruggles' distinctive signature.
