Additional Details

The album begins with an early presidential portrait of Lincoln (Ostendorf O-55) bearing a Charles D. Fredricks & Co. New York backmark, followed by Secretary of War Stanton and 43 military officers, most of them identified Union generals. The album was compiled after Grant's March 1864 promotion to lieutenant general; his portrait is inserted first among the generals. The omission of William T. Sherman suggests a date not much later than March 1864. Two heroes of the Battle of Gettysburg, generals John Reynolds and Winfield Scott Hancock, appear on facing pages.
