signed by frederick douglass on the front free end-paper as "fredk. Douglass." An early, possibly pre-war version of Frederick Douglass''s signature. Douglass wrote and signed his name in at least five or six distinct styles. In his book "The Signatures of America," Charles Hamilton calls attention to this inconsistency: "Just as in his speeches he moved from whimsy to fury to humor to pathos with wonderful skill, so in his script he varies the handwriting according to his mood. Sometimes it is bold and vigorous, sometimes cramped and furtive."
