the second edition, with a one page autograph letter signed from douglass to mr. d.p. lester, dated November 11, 1882, tipped to the front free end-paper. Douglass acknowledges a letter complimenting him on his work: "My Dear Sir. I gratefully acknowledge your note, which came in my absence and which but for thus coming, would have received earlier attention. I am not of those who can [?] indifference to the good opinions of my fellow man, and therefore freely tell you that your kind sentiments in respect to myself and my little work in the world was very grateful to my heart. Very truly yours, Fredk. Douglass." Douglass''s wife Anna passed away on August 4th of 1882. The loss of his companion of forty-four years sent the sixty-five year old Douglass into a long period of depression. His reply to Mr. Lester''s letter is all the more touching given Douglass''s delicate state of mind at this time.
