Additional Details

Charles Hill Baltimore (1908-1986) was a well-known educator and athletic coach in the District of Columbia. This scrapbook includes photographs from his childhood, his time as an Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity member at Howard University (class of 1931), and his career at the Deanwood School and Armstrong Tech. Highlights include: an artfully composed shot of a youth boxing match in 1938, and a 1942 library reception with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. It also includes a team photograph and 1952 newspaper article featuring perhaps Mr. Baltimore's most famous student: one-armed basketball player Gary Mays, the "One-Armed Bandit," an Armstrong basketball legend who held his own against Elgin Baylor but never got the opportunity to play professionally.
