In the 1930s and 1940s, Juneteenth celebrations were often held at Texas prisons, with the local community paying admission to hear music and watch baseball--a celebration of freedom held in support of the carceral state. The Texas State Penitentiary at Huntsville hosted a Juneteenth celebration for many years. This one featured "Colored Blues Singers from the Women's Unit of the Prison System. Also some hot music by the Black Jivers." The baseball game between the Prison Black Tigers and Riverside Hardhitters was a regular feature. The entire Huntsville community was welcome to pay their 25 cents: "Section of Grandstand will be Reserved for White Patrons." See Ethan Blue, "Doing Time in the Depression," pages 182-183.
