Additional Details

While appealing his conviction for draft resistance, Ali was kept out of the boxing ring for 3 1/2 years. In addition to his lecturing and activism, he also tried his hand at acting on Broadway, starring as the charismatic leader of a fictional Black nationalist group. Despite a well-regarded production team and supporting cast, a promotional appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, and a strong performance by Ali in the preview, he fell flat on Opening Night, telling the producer: "I fought my fight yesterday at the preview. I came to fight again tonight but I was done." Ali's status as one of the most controversial men in America might have hurt as well. The play ran for four nights only.
