Additional Details

This federally-funded production of Macbeth was directed by 20-year-old white whiz kid, Orson Welles, sponsored by a Negro Unit which was headed by white actor John Houseman. The cast, however, was entirely African-American; Canada Lee as Banquo is the best known of the actors today, but many of the roles were filled by nonprofessionals. Welles transplanted Shakespeare's Macbeth from Scotland to a Caribbean island, with voodoo taking the place of witchcraft.
