CENTENNIAL PRIZE WINNER (FOLK ART--CRAFTS.) "This axe was made by a Negro in Maryland and took the Premier Prize at the Centennial" (from the paper label affixed to the handle). Hickory axe-handle, 30 inches long, and 3-1/2 inches wide at the base; affixed to the base is a paper label, somewhat chipped but still readable in context. Maryland, circa 1876
