Additional Details

The original Morning Star was a ship purchased by the ABCFM and sent in 1856 to serve as Hawaii's link with other missions in Micronesia. It continued in this service until 1866. A second Morning Star was sunk in 1869, and a third served from 1871 to 1881. It was followed by several other vessels of the same name through the 1950s.
"He Mele uo ka Hoku Ao Hou" / "A Song for the New Morning Star." 13 3/4 x 7 inches, moderate foxing and toning, 3 very small holes. A ballad in Hawaiian with parallel text in English, lamenting the wreck of the second Morning Star and celebrating the arrival of the third. [Honolulu?], circa 1871 "An Original Hymn for the Departure of the Morning Star for Micronesia, 1876." 8 x 5 inches, one correction in manuscript. [Honolulu?], 1876. Neither broadside traced in OCLC or Forbes.
