Additional Details

Mariner 4 performed the first successful flyby of the planet Mars, returning the first pictures of the Martian surface. The successful mission of Mariner 10 was associated with two firsts: it was the first spacecraft to use the gravitational pull of one planet (Venus) to reach another (Mercury), and the first spacecraft mission to visit two planets. It also shot images of the lunar surface on its way to Venus and Mercury. Pioneer 11 was the first mission to explore Saturn and the second spacecraft in humanity's early reconnaissance of the outer solar system. The spacecraft studied aspects of Jupiter and Saturn.
