(JAPAN)
A large album with 78 richly printed and exquisitely hand-colored views of Japan.
Unusually, the majority of the photographs in the album are masterfully executed platinum prints. Each with an impressively lustrous tonality, and nearly all are hand-colored to a degree of excellence rarely seen in this genre of souvenir imagery. It is apparent that the photographs were originally produced by an array of photographers based on the variety of caption styles but the technical consistency in format, darkroom work, and coloring make it clear that the album was printed and compiled by a single photographer, quite likely a smaller Japanese studio at the turn of the twentieth century. Featuring various landscapes, occupational scenes, and architectural studies in Nikko, Tokyo, Kobe, Kyoto, Yokohama, Matsushima, Okayama, and Hakone. Platinum (76) and albumen (2) prints, the images measuring approximately 7x9 to 11 1/2x9 1/2 inches (17.8x22.9 to 29.2x24.1 cm.), a few slightly smaller, and the reverse, tipped at the corners recto/verso to black pages, most with captions and inventory numbers in the negative. Oblong large 4to, brown leatherette; twin-bolt binding. Circa 1905
