Fascinating and detailed album with over 100 hand-colored images of Japan, including many occupationals of geishas, acrobats, silk merchants, sake shops, temples, boating outings, and kimono-making, as well as street views from Yokohama, Nagasaki, and Tokyo. Hand-colored albumen prints, with approximately 23 measuring 10 1/2x8 1/4 inches (26.7x21 cm.) and 90 measuring 5x3 1/4 inches (12.7x8.3 cm.), and the reverse, mounted on light pink board with the small images on the left and the larger-format on the right; all but 2 with period captions, in ink, in English, below the image, as well as one with a caption in the negative and another with a printed caption, many faded; with the original tissue. Oblong folio, black lacquer covers depicting a figure in a cart with pearl inlay and gilt highlights and a gilt dragonfly with flora on verso, small chips to edges and backstrip nearly fully perished. 1880s
