(KANSAS.) Horton, Numon N. Letter written on an early Kansas-printed promotional letterhead for Fort Scott. Autograph Letter Signed as surgeon of the 47th United States Colored Troops, to an unidentified captain. 3 pages, 9 3/4 x 7 3/4 inches, on one folded sheet, plus a printed advertisement on the verso of the final page. Fort Scott, KS, 7 April 1867

Additional Details

The final printed page is a text advertisement titled "Description of Fort Scott and Bourbon County." The imprint line reads "Fort Scott Press Print--Hayward Bros"; the Fort Scott Press newspaper was founded in January 1866. Interesting and apparently unrecorded, not in Kansas Imprints or the supplement.
The letter includes good detail on Fort Scott life, including a description of a Grand Army event "in celebration of the surrender of Lee to Grant, consisting of plays, tableaux, supper, and a dance." He also notes that "every stage coach comes loaded with prospectors."
