(LINCOLN, ABRAHAM.) Cased tintype portrait, apparently produced for the 1864 campaign. Tintype photograph, 1 3/4 x 1 1/4 inches to sight, in original thermoplastic case with gilt mat; minimal wear to contents, skillful repairs and one small chip to the case. Photograph not examined out of mat. Np, circa 1864

Additional Details

The image is a ferrotype photograph of an engraved Lincoln portrait, which is in turn a reverse image of a 9 February 1864 photograph taken by Anthony Berger at the Brady gallery--the portrait in use for many years on the $5 bill (Ostendorf O-92). Because the image size is greatly reduced from the original engraving, it can easily be mistaken for an original photograph. Both the outer case and the inner gilt mat are decorated with patriotic relief motifs such as an eagle, cannon, flags, railroad engine, and steamship.
