"Immortal, one of the supreme utterances of the principles of democratic freedom"--Printing and the Mind of Man 351. An early printing, just two days after the speech was delivered. The president's address appears near the center of the front page in two paragraphs, following a summary of the day's proceedings. The reporter noted "long continued applause" at the conclusion of the address.
In addition, a brief news item at the bottom of the page notes that "The original copy of the President's emancipation proclamation has been awarded to T.B. Bryan of Chicago, for the sum of $3,000."
