A contemporary, Colonel S. W. Burt, aptly described Lincoln's features in this photograph as "majestically pitiful." Lincoln sat for Warren at the insistence of his son Tad, and although Alexander Gardner had photographed him only a few days before his death, Warren continued to sell prints on this mount after the assassination.
