Maxwell Whiteman listed this as the thirteenth novel by an African-American author; however recent scholarship has made significant changes in both the order and verifiable authorship of his list. Subtracted are Emma Dunham Kelley's "Megda" and "Four Girls at Cottage City," and added is Harriet Wilson's "Our Nig."
