John Johnson was the publisher of Ebony, Jet, and other black publications. He could easily be described as the Rupert Murdoch of black publishing. These photographs appeared in various issues of Jet and Ebony over a couple of decades. Some of the photographs bear the stamps of African-American photographers on the reverse.
