Additional Details

The patriarch of this three-generation collection is General Alvan Bolster (1795-1862), a general store owner and postmaster in East Rumford, ME. It begins with two courtship letters he wrote to his future wife in 1819, and includes 23 other letters to and from him and his family from 1825-79, as well as his business memoranda book from 1823-30. Alvan's son William W. Bolster Sr. (1823-1907) became a prominent Republican in Auburn, ME. He is represented here by an expense journal, two letters, and a memorial address. Among the papers of Alvan's grandson William W. Bolster Jr. (1872-1944) are three juvenile diaries dated 1884 to 1886. He makes several mentions of Governor Frederick Robie, a friend of his father (26 June and 1 July 1884). Also included are his Bates College expense ledger, 1890-92; two certificates, and several photos of his later hunting and fishing trips.
