Additional Details

The Associated Press caption: "Dr. Martin Luther King's head is shoved into a counter today as he attempted to register at the Hotel Albert here. Throwing the punch is Jimmy Robinson, a member of the National States Rights Party. Negro woman at left is trying to avoid the altercation." This was the first Freedom Day attempting mass voter registration at Selma. Selma police chief Wilson Baker, who opposed the voter drive but wanted to avoid bad press, actually arrested the man who attacked Dr. King.
