Additional Details

First American book with chromolithography, a book on medical herbs. In his introduction, Mattson notes that "The colored illustrations . . . have been procured at great expense; and were executed by a new process, invented by Mr. Sharp, recently of London, being the first of the kind ever executed in the United States. The different tints were produced by a series of printed impressions, the brush not having been used in giving effect or uniformity to the coloring" (page xi). Reese, American Color Plate Books 17 ("a separate pull of the plate was required to apply each separate color, with up to five colors appearing in some plates").
