Additional Details

James Grant Gilchrist (1842-1906) was an 1863 graduate of Hahnemann Medical College (now Drexel University College of Medicine), served as a sergeant in the Civil War, and then embarked on a long career as a homeopathic physician. In 1867 he became a professor of surgery at the University of Michigan, started a private practice in Owatonna, MN in 1869, and then later served as chief of staff for the Detroit Homoeopathic Hospital from 1879 to 1883. Most of the scrapbook contains newspaper clippings--some relating to his career, others to medical practice in general, and others to his personal interests. The last few pages are covered with 30 pieces of his printed ephemera: handbills, circular letters, business cards, invoices, letterhead, and prescription cards. The volume was originally an index to another Philadelphia-area physician's ledger from 1862 to 1864; 11 pages of patient's names are still visible, with the dates of their treatments. After the period of this scrapbook, Dr. Gilchrist taught surgery for many years at the University of Iowa.
