Additional Details

The political chief of Baja California, on a visit to Mazatlán, describes his home states as being in a state of near-rebellion inspired by the examples of Texas and Yucatán. The great distance to the capitol has led to the sentiment that California is a colony of Mexico, rather than an integral part. 100 soldiers are requested to assert control over the region. This was no idle complaint--Castillo Negrete had seen an open rebellion led by Dominican friar Gabriel González (not mentioned by name here) in the previous month.
