Additional Details

A portrait of the longtime Bishop of Puebla, known for his struggles with the Jesuits. It appears to be issued as a stand-alone engraving, rather than as a plate from a book. The caption circling his images reads in Latin "Ven Ioanes de Palafox episcopus angelopolita nus et postea oxomen," surrounded by an elaborate array of saints bearing tribute. At bottom are the addition captions "Ingentes animas praegrandia nominapraesul unicus, at gemino spiritu adductus habet" and "otus amor, virtus, sapienta, gratia totus, cui sacra cande ovis cui sacra plaudit avis." The engraver was active in Mexico from about 1756 to 1815. "Catalogo de los retratos de personajes españoles," 1387-4; none in OCLC.
