Additional Details

A detailed analysis of the ancient and imposing Fort San Juan de Ulúa, on a peninsula overlooking the key port city of Veracruz. All armaments are listed in detail. The fortress is deemed on page 6 to be susceptible to reduction by a single well-armed frigate: 'una fragata de 50 o 60 piezas puede presentar a Ulua, por el canal del norte, mas artilleria de la que tiene la fortaleza para responderle.' On page 9, they even note that some of the living quarters for soldiers have been used by a merchant to store liquor (aguariente). The study concludes with a warning that American warships were preparing to invade: 'Esta es la situacion de Ulua a fines de octubre de este año al zarpar de sacrificios las fragatas vapores de guerra Misisipi y Prinseton, la de vela Falmounth, las corvetas Quinci Adamas, Saratoga, y Sta Maria y los bergantines Sommers y Purpoise." These preparations, though proposed during peacetime, were not without cause. In 17 months, a large American amphibious force would land at Veracruz and capture it after a short siege.
