first edition. Almonte was sent as an envoy of the Mexican government to reassure the Texan colonists, but also to make observations on their military capacities. His trip took him from Nacogdoches to San Felipe, Brazoria, Velasco, Matagorda, and Harrisburg (Houston). These notes from his journey cover natural history, Indian tribes, and geography, and present a somewhat symathetic portrait of the Texan people. Clark, Old South III:5; Howes A186 ("b"); Jenkins, Basic Texas Books 2 ("one of the most valuable descriptions of Texas on the eve of revolution"); Palau 8199; Streeter, Texas 816.
