Additional Details

In the United States Colored Troops regiments, only a vanishingly small number of officers were African-American, but the corporal and sergeant ranks were filled by Black soldiers. This commission was issued in occupied Texas four months after the "Juneteenth" freedom proclamation, two weeks before the regiment returned north for discharge.
