(MILITARY--CIVIL WAR.) Elaborate service certificate for a Black Civil War veteran from a Massachusetts regiment. Chromolithographed certificate, illustrated with battle scenes and a portrait of Lincoln, completed in manuscript for Sergeant Irenas J. Palmer, 25 x 20 inches; several closed tears, some reaching into the image, 1-inch chip in left margin tastefully restored in facsimile, laid down and stabilized on paper. Additional Details

Accomplished for Irenas J. Palmer (1842-1919) who was a sergeant in the 5th Regiment Massachusetts Cavalry from January 1864 until after the close of the war. Palmer saw action in various engagements including Petersburg and Point Lookout. The 1910 census found him as a carpenter in Olean in western New York. He was a member of the Olean post of the Grand Army of the Republic veterans group when he had this certificate made in 1914.
