Additional Details

A piece of instrumental music written and self-published by a member of the famed 54th Massachusetts Volunteers, and dedicated to its fallen colonel, Robert Gould Shaw. It is illustrated with an engraving of rifles, tents, and cannons, one of them emblazoned "Fort Wagner" in honor of the regiment's most famous battle. The composer was apparently Henry E. Jones (1843-1924), an African-American private in the regiment's Company A from Lanesborough, MA. Only 2 copies in OCLC, and only one other known at auction (Swann sale, 31 March 2016, lot 363).
