Color lithographed broadside/flyer, 8-1/2 x 11 inches, evenly toned with the text on one side with a complex image on the reverse depicting a Union soldier surrounded by ex-slaves, holding an American flag with a banner reading 'Freedom to the Slave,' one side, another soldier is removing his shackles; a slave in the foreground is tearing up a Confederate flag, and another has put down his plough and is reading a newspaper, with a battle scene, a public school and a church are also in the background. N.Y. or Philadelphia, circa 1863
a rare piece of black civil war history, with only a handful of copies located. This flyer was passed out in black neighborhoods shortly after Congress voted to allow African Americans to join the war effort. We have seen copies in various sizes including a six foot tall variation that was meant to be pasted up on a wall. All versions were intended to recruit in Boston, New York and Philadelphia, where a school training officers to lead colored regiments was put together. Only the third copy we have handled. It is said that the longer text that appears on the larger versions was written by Frederick Douglass.
