Additional Details

first edition of a scarce book. Martin Robinson Delany, (1812-1885) was a tremendously complex and talented man. Editor, author, physician, explorer, abolitionist and pan-Africanist, in 1858-1859, Delany was part of an ambitious colonization plan to explore the Niger Valley in Africa to find suitable land to settle American slaves and freedmen. The exploratory expedition was made, and agreements with local Abeokuta chiefs as well. However Civil War at home, and a reluctant British Parliament essentially quashed the project.
