Additional Details

Three of these images bear the backmark of "Mellen's Views, published by the Rocky Mountain View Company, Colorado Springs, Colorado": an exterior view of the Tabernacle, an interior shot, and the Bee-Hive House with the Eagle Gate--all apparently by the Colorado photographer George E. Mellen. We are aware of no other Mellen views of Salt Lake City, though one circa 1888 Mellen view of Castle Gate, UT appeared in a Swann sale, 31 March 2011, lot 121. Also included are three without backmarks or photographer's credits: one captioned in the negative "Assembly Hall, S.L. City" (possibly by important local photographer Charles Roscoe Savage, who used a similar caption style); one showing the Tabernacle and Salt Lake Temple under construction, dated 1886 in pencil on verso; and another of the snow-topped Tabernacle and Salt Lake Temple after completion, with the Deseret News building in foreground circa 1893-1909.
