Additional Details

These stock certificates were issued in late 1844 and early 1845 to raise funds for weapons, ammunition, and other supplies for the Nauvoo Legion's arsenal. Currency was scarce in Nauvoo, so these certificates may have seen local use as a medium of exchange. The recipient David Dutton Yearsley Sr. (1808-1849) was a member of the Seventy and went to Winter Quarters in 1846, but never made it to Utah. Nyholm, Mormon Currency, pages 90-91; Rust, Mormon and Utah Coin and Currency, pages 27-28. We trace only 3 other examples, only one of them coming to auction, at a Smythe sale in 2008 which brought $32,000.
