Additional Details

first edition of the minstrel tune that was destined to become the anthem of the Southern Confederacy. Composed by Emmett as a semi-comedic piece and performed in 1859, Dixie gained steam after the outbreak of the war. The original lyrics, all published here, are, aside from the famous chorus, in dialect and distinctly comedic. After secession, some new, more apt lyrics were added.
